WELCOME

ALIVE & AUTHENTIC

Down by the ferry terminal in the tiny waterfront village Utne, surrounded by a charming garden with white picket fences and a stunning view of fjords and mountains, lies one of Norway’s oldest and best- preserved wooden hotels – Utne hotel.

At this hotel little moments become memorable, and a state of simple presence and beingness is in the air. The quintessential feeling of idyllic grandmother nostalgia hits you as soon as you touch the door handle. It is like coming home. Here you are welcomed with a warm and genuine smile.

With 300 (1722-2022) years of history embedded in its walls the hotel tells a tale of strong women and hostesses who have generously cared for and about their guests and their tiny village for centuries.

You will feel an urge to return to this place.

“The rain and mist disappeared over the fjord and this beautiful place revealed itself to us. Welcomed with warmth and hospitality, cider from Hardanger in tall glasses, a wonderful view and exquisite flavours.”

ACCOMMODATION

LET US GO UPSTAIRS

To stay at Utne hotel is a bit like visiting grandmother’s house with its sheer lace curtains, creaking floor boards and squeaking beds.

All the 17 rooms at Utne hotel are unique with historical features, furniture and styles. They all have modern and tiled ensuite bathrooms. The rooms can all be used as twin/ double/ single rooms. Some of the rooms have a view towards the fjord/ waterfront and others face the quiet back garden. None of the rooms have a television. This has been done in order to preserve the quaint and historical atmosphere, and to encourage evening chats or the reading of a good book.

Put away your mobile phone and look your companions in the eyes. Be present here and now and treasure every second. Perhaps accompanied by a glass of sparkling cider.

TO STAY IN A HISTORY BOOK

Utne hotel is Norway’s oldest protected wooden hotel that has been in continuous operation for nearly 300 years. It all started in 1722 as a guesthouse with a living room, kitchen and one bedroom. Utne hotel has for centuries greeted its guests with rich traditions and a warm and thoughtful attentiveness.

Considering the hotel’s age, it is no wonder that one can hear creaking sounds or sense the presence of previous generations watching over the place. It is like staying in a history book.

The hotel has throughout its existence been managed by strong women, and for 70 years ‘Mother Utne’ was in charge of the hotel. Today the hotel hostess is Bente Raaen Widding and together with her husband Kjetil Widding they form the hostmanship at Utne hotel. They make sure that you are welcomed with a warm and genuine smile.

IN THE SPIRIT OF ‘MOTHER UTNE’

At Utne hotel the women have always been in charge. The story of Mor Utne is widely known. Strong-willed and determined Torbjørg Johannesdotter Utne, which was her real name, ran the hotel with love and strength for 70 years.

It has been written about her: “There we were met by the lovely hotel hostess Torbjørg, she exuded such a good and friendly nature that everyone liked her, and she was known in and beyond Europe, from Hannover to America”.

The local population in Utne greatly appreciated ‘Mother Utne’ and when she passed away they collected money to buy a silver wreath for her funeral. Today this silver wreath is hanging in the hotel restaurant.
